The star-haired blue pillow ( Aubrieta columnae ) is a species of the genus blue pillow ( Aubrieta ) in the cruciferous family .

features

The star-haired blue pillow is a perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 5 to 20 centimeters. The plant is multi-stemmed, hairy and grows in the cushions that cover the ground. The leaves are alternate, linear-spatulate to inversely ovate, wedge-shaped or rhombic, indistinctly stalked, up to 2 centimeters long and more or less strongly serrated. The terminal inflorescence is a loose, little-flowered cluster without a bract. The flowers are medium in size. There are 4 upright sepals that are up to 8 millimeters long. The 4 petals are deep purple in color, are up to 28 millimeters long, have a narrow nail lying in the calyx and a rounded, spreading plate up to 7 millimeters wide. The ovary is on top. The fruits are pods with long valves. They are ellipsoidal, erect, star-haired and up to 16 millimeters long. The stylus have a length of up to 1 centimeter.

Flowering time is from April to June.

Occurrence

The star-haired blue pillow occurs in the central and eastern Mediterranean area from Italy to Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and Romania in rocky places up to the alpine level.

Systematics

There are four subspecies of the star-haired blue pillow:

  • Aubrieta columnae subsp. columnae ; this subspecies is endemic to the central and southern Apennines in Italy
  • Aubrieta columnae subsp. croatica (Schott) Mattf. (Syn .: A. croatica Schott ); this subspecies occurs only on the Balkan Peninsula and in Romania
  • Aubrieta columnae subsp. italica (Boiss.) Mattf. ; this subspecies is endemic to Monte Gargano in Italy, but may also occur in Sicily
  • Aubrieta columnae subsp. pirinica Assenov ; the subspecies is endemic to southern Bulgaria.
