The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (APO) is a symphony orchestra from the New Zealand city of Auckland . The home venue of the ensemble , founded in 1980, is the Auckland Town Hall . Under the current direction of Giordano Bellincampi , it also acts as an accompanying orchestra for the New Zealand Opera and the Royal New Zealand Ballet .

history

The orchestra was founded by musicians in 1980, with the newly formed Auckland Philharmonia Society Inc serving as legal entity . For 25 years this company was responsible for the artistic direction, while matters of management and finances were taken over by an advisory board . In 2005 there was a fundamental structural change, as a result of which the Auckland Philharmonia Foundation and the Society now jointly manage the fortunes of the orchestra. The Society remains responsible for artistic and the Foundation for financial matters.

In addition to its cooperation with the New Zealand Opera and the Royal New Zealand Ballet , the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra performs over 50 concerts a year. In addition, it works in cooperation with the New Zealand Ministry of Culture in the field of young musicians. Since 2016 it has been under the direction of Giordano Bellincampi , who took over this position from Eckehard Stier , who worked at APO from 2009 to 2015. Previous musical directors included John Hopkins and Miguel Harth-Bedoya .
