Audantia is a genus of medium-sized lizards from the group of iguanas that occurs on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola and the surrounding smaller islands. The genus was named in honor of André Audant, a zoologist at the Haiti State Agricultural School, whocaughtthe type specimens of the genus.
features
Audantia species are small lizards and reach head-to-trunk lengths of 5.7 to 7.9 cm (males) and 4.9 to 6.6 cm (females). The monophyly of the genus is supported by a total of 102 apomorphies , 13 of which are molecular biological and 89 morphological. The morphological include the parietal eye in the bone suture between the parietal bone and the frontal bone , the arrow-shaped interclavicle, a bone that connects the actual clavicle with the breastbone (sternum), 3 or 4 lumbar vertebrae and 6 to 7 caudal vertebrae in front of the first vertebra capable of autotomy . The caudal vertebrae in front of the first autotomy-capable vertebra have transverse processes , followed by several autotomy-capable vertebrae with short, laterally directed processes. The post frontal , a small, paired cover bone of the roof of the skull, may be present or absent. Palatine teeth are usually present. The splenial bone, a small bone in the lower jaw of amphibians and reptiles, is missing. There is no gender dimorphism , i. H. Males and females look alike.
