The AUDIOVERSUM is a Science Center (science museum) in Innsbruck , Tyrol , Austria , which makes scientific relationships and medical-technical developments in hearing implant technology interactively tangible and understandable. The aim is to increase awareness of the importance of hearing for communication, quality of life and human development. The exhibits are interactive, enable self-determined learning, do not require any prior knowledge and have a playful component.

History of origin

The science museum was created on the initiative of MED-EL , the international manufacturer of hearing implant systems in direct cooperation with the city of Innsbruck. As a science center, it combines medicine, technology, education and art. Multimedia installations, developed in cooperation with the renowned Ars Electronica Center Linz, invite you to participate and sharpen your senses.

After three years of planning and construction, the Mayor of Innsbruck, Christine Oppitz-Plörer, handed over the former premises of the “Kammerlichtspiele” to the company MED-EL and the association “Free Theater Innsbruck” in autumn 2012 .

The Science Museum opened on January 30, 2013 after one and a half years of planning, developing the exhibits and realizing the exhibition concept.

In the context of special exhibitions under the categories Heard, Known and Heard, Seen, the focus is on targeted knowledge transfer and contemporary formats.

Furnishing

Architecture concept

The exhibition architecture takes up the soundscape in terms of shape and color as well as the materials used. Soft and organic materials such as felt optimize the acoustics. Plastered plasterboard walls create spatially delimited scenarios and guide through the exhibition. The use of soft and neutral colors from gray to white creates a neutral room. This makes it possible to stage individual objects with light accents and to connect exhibition areas through the use of color. The indirect lighting along the exhibition floor plan also creates a spatial bracket and a uniform feeling of space.

The exhibits in the permanent exhibition “Hearing Adventure” were developed in collaboration with the project partner Ars Electronica , a future and technology company.

18 exhibits and installations invite you to hear, see and be amazed: a virtual journey through the human ear, the functioning of bone sound, the discovery of an urban soundscape when stepping on the stairs ("sound staircase") or empathizing with a hearing impairment are interactive , multimedia and conveyed in a didactic way:

  • Screaming room : At the beginning of the exhibition, visitors have the opportunity to measure the strength of their own voice in a closed screaming room. A scale shows the comparison with the loudness of animals.
  • Binaural game : Here spatial hearing is sensitized in a simple and entertaining way. The participants follow the chirping played through headphones and try to locate and free the birds.
  • Auditory cortex : one sound and many associations. How are acoustic signals ultimately interpreted in the brain? An artistic translation of this is provided by the auditory cortex station, which conveys these complex processes in the human hearing center to visitors.
  • Hair cell music : Visitors can play a melody by touching oversized hair cells modeled on the human original. To simulate how hearing impairment due to the loss of hair cells affects the hearing, different frequency ranges can be activated or deactivated by bending the hair cells.
