action
The siblings Jaime and Jemma McLeod live with their father on a country estate near the harbor city of Sydney . At the beginning of the 19th century , Australia was still a British colony and is mainly used to ban offenders from the mother country there. The state of New South Wales is controlled by the corrupt and violent Captain Corkle, who tramples on the law and tries to intimidate the residents with his police units and accomplices. Lachalan McLeod, the children's father, is determined to put an end to the bustle of Corkle and his gang. He has meticulously collected incriminating material that he now wants to bring to England in order to obtain a dismissal and indictment against Corkle. But Corkle gets ahead of him and has him arrested.
Jaime and Jemma McLeod also fall into the hands of Corkle and his henchmen and end up in prison. There they get to know the street boys Tom and Nipper. They manage to escape. With the help of the landlady Polly, who runs a tavern at the harbor, and the farm worker Rodriguez, the children flee to an island near the city. In the meantime, more street children have joined them, driven by hunger and abject poverty, who have nothing more to lose. Then there is the tramp Joe Dunn, whom they can win over. They all swear to join forces against Corkle and do everything possible to free McLeod and obtain justice.
