Chrome up
Chrome plating refers to a process of surface technology . Chromium is deposited on a workpiece using an electro-galvanic process . In contrast to chrome plating, this chrome layer is not used for corrosion protection , but to increase the material thickness of the workpiece.
One area of application for this process is the repair of worn machine parts. If, for example, a crankshaft has to be ground on the main or connecting rod bearings in the event of an engine failure , it will no longer have the original dimensions. Usually this is offset by the use of so-called undersize bearings. If such special bearings are not available, the shaft can be brought back to normal dimensions by partially applying a hard chrome layer and then grinding . After that, plain or roller bearings in standard dimensions can be used again.
