The Monkey King ( Chinese : 大 闹天宫, Da nao tian gong ) is a Chinese cartoon by director Wan Laiming. It is based on the story of the Asian legendary figure Sun Wukong , as described in the classic epic The Journey to the West . The title was also broadcast on German television under the title "The Battle of the Golden Ape".
action
The plot is based on the first chapters of the journey to the west , in which it is described how the monk Xuanzang Sanzang is accompanied on his journey by three mythical figures, of which the ape-like Sun Wukong with his mixture of impetuous behavior, great courage, strange humor and sometimes surprising wisdom represents the actual main character of the story. The other companions are Sha Wujing or Sha Gojo, a water demon or half-demon (depending on the source) and Zhu Bajie or Cho Hakkai, a person who became a pig-like demon after killing a thousand pigs.
The film focuses on Sun Wukong and his chaotic, anarchist revolt against the divine order and the jade emperor ruling in heaven, at the end of which he rises to become king of all apes .
background
The King of the Apes was created between 1964 and 1965 as the most ambitious Chinese animation project to date, but was sharply criticized against the background of the Cultural Revolution and only performed to a very limited extent. Only in the course of time did he become a model for almost all of Chinese animation cinema.
The English title Havoc in Heaven (formerly also: Uproar in Heaven ), in German about “Aufruhr im Himmel”, corresponds more to the Chinese 大 闹天宫, which in the Mandarin-speaking world has become a proverbial expression for causing chaos .
