The Augsburger Plärrer is the largest festival in Bavarian Swabia with around 1.2 million visitors a year . It takes place twice a year: in spring (beginning on Easter Sunday) and in late summer (end of August / beginning of September) and each lasts about two weeks. The Plärrer is set up on the small parade ground near the municipal outdoor pools. Most of the showmen come from southern Germany. At the same time, the Augsburg Dult takes place between Jakobertor and Vogeltor in spring .

history

This folk festival can look back on more than a thousand years of tradition. The Plärrer can be traced back to the Dulten in the city area. The entertainment businesses were relocated to the gates of Augsburg in 1878 after complaints about noise. The later name Plärrer is derived from the visitors' “chatter”. In 1976 this term becomes official. Bertolt Brecht , born in Augsburg, paid tribute to it in his poem Das Plärrerlied in 1917 . In 1927, alcohol was again served in the form of blueberry wine for the first time after the First World War . At Easter 2013, mulled wine was sold for the first time due to the persistent cold .

Fairground

The largely fenced-in area of the small parade ground is also only referred to as Plärrer in the region, with the exception of official address details . Outside of the folk festivals, it is usually used as a free car park or for other events. Traveling circuses are also regular guests there .

Marquee tents

The first beer tents were set up in 1930. The two large, stationary festival tents “Binswanger” and “Schaller” are occasionally used for political and election campaign events. In 2012, a fourth tent was added on the Osterplärrer, the Sterndl`Alm, it is supposed to be home to "upscale gastronomy". When the weather is nice, the roof of this tent can be opened completely.
