Friedrich Conrad August Fick (born May 5, 1833 in Petershagen near Minden, † March 24, 1916 in Hildesheim ) was a German philologist and linguist.

Life

August Fick studied philology in Göttingen from 1852–56, mainly under Theodor Benfey . He became a member of the Corps Teutonia Göttingen. Fick worked as a teacher at the local high school from 1858 . In 1869 he was appointed assessor of the Göttingen Society of Sciences . and in 1876 was appointed associate professor of comparative languages at Göttingen University.

His main achievement is the dictionary of the Indo-European basic language (Göttingen 1868), the 2nd edition of which appeared as a comparative dictionary of the Indo-European languages (Göttingen 1870, 3rd edition 1874–76, 4 vols.). The work is also of great interest for cultural history. It is considered the first complete compilation of the vocabulary common to all Indo-European languages. This must therefore already belong to the Indo-European prehistory. Accordingly, multiple conclusions can be drawn from it about the culture of this common Indo-European epoch. In 1888 he was appointed full professor at the University of Breslau. There he was after three years (1891) for health reasons emeritus and moved to Hildesheim , where he died on March 24, 1916th

On the occasion of his 80th birthday in 1913 he was elected a foreign member of the Göttingen Society of Sciences.
