genealogy

August Freiherr von Schorlemer-Lieser came from the original Westphalian Catholic noble family Schorlemer. His influential grandfather was the German politician Burghard von Schorlemer-Alst , known as the Catholic Westphalian peasant king , and at times one of Bismarck's most prominent political opponents . His father was the Prussian civil servant Clemens Freiherr von Schorlemer-Lieser (1856–1922). In 1880 he married the very wealthy Maria Puricelli (born February 1, 1855 Krefeld † 1936), the only daughter of the iron and steel works, gas works, knight and winery owner Eduard Puricelli (1826-1893), who inherited his fortune in the millions. Together, his parents expanded Eduard Puricelli's villa into Lieser Castle and managed the numerous inherited wineries on the Moselle and the industrial holdings of his grandfather. His parents called themselves von Schorlemer-Lieser after their new castle. August had five siblings. He was the oldest son.

After the end of the war in 1918, he worked for the district government in Trier until 1922 . In 1922, after the death of his father, he took over the management of the family's wineries and was also committed to the profession of winery owners and winegrowers. He became chairman of the tax committee at the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer winegrowers' association and also at the German winegrowing association.
