August Geßner

August Geßner (born January 17, 1880 in Smíchov (Prague), † November 2, 1944 in Konstantinsbad , West Bohemia ) was a Sudeten German university professor. He was a professor of materials and building materials theory and rector of the German Technical University in Prague .

Life

August Geßner attended secondary school and the mechanical engineering department of the German Technical University in Prague . From 1903 to 1907 he was first assistant, then design engineer at the mechanical-technical laboratory of the Vienna University of Technology . During his student days he joined the Teutonia fraternity in Prague in 1898 . In 1906 he was promoted to Dr. techn. PhD . From 1906 to 1908 he worked in the department for permanent way and bridge building materials at the Kaiser-Ferdinands-Nordbahn in Vienna. In 1909 he changed employers and took over the management of the research facility at the Škoda works in Pilsen.

In 1912 he was appointed professor by the Technical University in Prague and held the chair for construction and strength, building materials and materials science. Later he was also elected prorector and rector of the German Technical University in Prague.

Geßner published treatises on strength tests, buckling strength of Mannesmann steel tube columns, high-quality concrete, concrete roads. He wrote articles for the specialist journals Stahl und Eisen , Zement und Zement und Beton as well as in the Austrian construction newspaper and in the Melan Festschrift.

In Czechoslovakia (since 1935) and then also in the Reich Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia , Geßner was the chairman of the German Cultural Association .
