August Goebel (* 1839 in Münstermaifeld ; † November 26, 1905 ) was a German entrepreneur and co-founder of A. Goebel & Company , which later became known as the Goebel Brewing Company .

biography

August Goebel was born in Münstermaifeld in 1839 . In 1856 he emigrated to the USA . He originally wanted to settle in Chicago , but had to stay in Detroit due to financial difficulties . There he began an apprenticeship as a bookbinder at Elwoods Bookbindery .

Three years later he enlisted on October 26, 1859 for the Scott Guards Regiment of the Michigan Militia. There he was promoted to first sergeant and secretary. During the American Civil War he enlisted in the same company, Company A, Michigan 2nd Infantry ( Company A, Michigan 2nd Infantry ). In August 1862 he was promoted to captain . Due to hearing damage, he had to resign from the front line. However, he continued to serve as Lieutenant Colonal and Assistant Inspector General. On April 15, 1891, he was honorably discharged.

In 1873, Goebel and Theodore Gorenflo founded A. Goebel & Company , which grew steadily during Goebel's lifetime. In 1889 August Goebel convinced the “English Syndicate”, a group of investors from London, to buy up several breweries in Detroit and to merge them. The breweries were incorporated into A. Goebel & Company. In 1890 the company officially became the Goebel Brewing Company, Ltd. with a capital stock of $ 600,000. Registered. First President and Manager was August Goebel, Vice President his partner Gorenflo. Goebel's son August Jr. became secretary and treasurer in 1891.

In addition to his work for the brewery, Goebel held several honorary and political offices: Among other things, he was Superintendant of Public Parks, Representative in the Michigan Legislature, Member of the Detroit City Council, Acting Mayor of Detroit and President of the Water Works Board.

Goebel died in 1905 as a result of an illness. He is buried in Elmwood Cemetery , Detroit . Fred Brede took over the office of President of the Goebel Brewing Company.

August Goebel married Sophie Hellings. The couple had eleven children, four of whom died early.
