August Hassack

August Hassack (born August 1, 1803 in St. Pölten ; † January 12, 1859 there ) was a pharmacist, Austrian politician and the seventh mayor of St. Pölten.

Life

August Hassack was born in St. Pölten in 1803 as the son of a trader. The trained pharmacist ran a pharmacy in Ernstbrunn from 1832, before he acquired the Zum Goldenen Löwen pharmacy in 1833 . In 1848 he became a captain in the National Guard, in 1850 he was appointed mayor of St. Pölten. During his tenure he ordered the demolition of the city walls, he had a hospital built in Schmidgasse as well as the court and the military secondary school. Depending on the source, he resigned from office in December 1858 for health reasons or he was in office until his death. He died in St. Pölten in 1859.
