August Heine (born January 11, 1842 in Halberstadt ; † November 9, 1919 there ) was a German social democratic politician.

Life

Heine attended elementary school and then the secondary school . Then he learned the hat-making trade from his father Heinrich . He then traveled through Germany, Austria, France, Switzerland and Northern Italy during his years of traveling . After his return he was an independent hat maker in Halberstadt until his death.

Politically, he was initially a supporter of the Progress Party . In 1871 he published the progressive, democratic Halberstädter Volkszeitung. Increasingly dissatisfied with the Progressive Party, he switched to social democracy. Until it was banned by the Socialist Act , he was editor of the Halberstadt Free Press. In the years 1883 and 1884 he was editor of the Halberstädter Sunday newspaper. This also fell victim to the ban. Heine himself was sentenced to six months in prison for offenses against the press. From 1879 to 1884 he was a member of the city council of Halberstadt. From 1884 to 1887 and 1890 to 1893 he was a member of the Reichstag . He also wrote various popular scripts and was a translator of articles in French and English. After 1893 he retired from political life, but resigned from the SPD in 1914 in protest against the approval of the war credits by the Social Democrats and turned to the USPD . In 1919 he reversed this step again.
