August Heinrich Matthiä

August Heinrich Matthiä (born December 25, 1769 in Göttingen ; † January 6, 1835 in Altenburg ) was a German classical philologist , high school director and author of numerous textbooks.

Life

Matthiä was the son of the medical professor and librarian Georg Matthiä . He attended the University of Göttingen and came to Amsterdam as a tutor in the spring of 1789 . In May 1798 he returned and after Germany took on a proposal from Christian Gottlob Heyne's the place of a teacher of Latin, Greek and German at the Institute for young foreigners, that of the French emigrants Baron Jean-Joseph Mounier on Belvedere near Weimar had been established .

Since the institute in Belvedere was closed at the end of 1801, Matthiä moved in 1802 - again on Heyne's recommendation - as director of the Friedrichs-Gymnasium in Altenburg , which he reorganized with great success. Here he stayed until the end of his life. He died on January 6, 1835 of complications from a stroke.

His brother Friedrich Christian Matthiä (1763-1822) was also a teacher and academic book author.
