Georg August Krug (born April 15, 1815 in Miltenberg ; † December 30, 1856 ) was a German-American entrepreneur and brewer . His August Krug Brewery was the predecessor company for the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company .

Life

August Krug emigrated to the United States at the age of 33 . There he opened a restaurant in Kilbourntown, one of the earliest settlements in Milwaukee . In 1849 he built a brewery attached to the restaurant, the August Krug Brewery . Since Krug did not have adequate facilities for cooling the beer, only about 150 barrels of beer were brewed in the first year. To solve this problem, he built an underground storage room in order to be able to store the beer at a constantly low temperature. This storage room was the first of its kind in Milwaukee.

August Krug was married to Anna Maria Krug. In 1850 his father, Georg Krug, visited him, who provided him with financial means to expand the business. He was accompanied by Krug's eight-year-old nephew, August Uihlein , who took over management of the company in 1875.

The additional funds enabled Krug to hire several employees, including the accountant Joseph Schlitz , who continued the company after his death and expanded it to become the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company .

August Krug died in 1856. He is buried in the Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee .

His wife married Joseph Schlitz two years later . In 1887, after her death, Krug's nephews, the Uihlein brothers, took over the business.
