August Uihlein (born August 25, 1842 in Wertheim ; † October 11, 1911 ) was a German entrepreneur and head of the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company .

biography

August Uihlein's parents, Josef Benedikt Ühlein and Katharina Krug, ran the Gasthaus zur Krone in Wertheim . In 1850, eight-year-old Uihlein accompanied his grandfather, Georg Krug, to America . His uncle, August Krug , ran an inn there with an attached brewery. Both narrowly escaped death when their ship sank during the crossing. Krug and Uihlein had to hold on to a drifting box until they were rescued by the American sailing ship Devonshire .

Uihlein attended the German-English Academy in Milwaukee . He then studied from 1855 to 1857 at St. Louis University . In 1858, just nine weeks after his studies, the 16-year-old Uihlein persuaded his uncle's successor, Joseph Schlitz , to hire him as an accountant. There he switched the previous system to double-entry bookkeeping . At the same time, Uihlein was employed by the Second Ward Savings Bank.

In 1860, Uihlein began working as an accountant, archivist and clerk for the Joseph Uhrig Brewing Company . There he was promoted to general manager at the age of 20. When he returned to Milwaukee in 1867, he joined the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company as an accountant. In his will, the owner Joseph Schlitz named him his successor. After his death in 1875, Uihlein was responsible for running the business together with his brothers Henry , Alfred and Edward . They drove the expansion of the company, among other things, by building a railway network for product distribution. Uihlein was elected chairman of the board in 1880. He held this position until his death.

When Joseph Schlitz's widow, Anna Maria Krug-Schlitz, died in 1887, the Uihlein brothers took over the company. By 1895 they had developed Schlitz beer into the third largest brewery in the USA.

In addition to his work at the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company, Uihlein was also involved in finance, real estate and other businesses.

In his spare time, Uihlein was engaged in trotting . He was the owner of the successful horse "Harvester". He also donated large sums of money to the German-English Academy and the Milwaukee Public Library .

August Uihlein died in 1911 while visiting Germany. He is buried in the Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee .
