Alfred Uihlein

Alfred Eugene Uihlein (born April 17, 1852 in Wertheim ; † February 21, 1935 ) was a German brewer and president of the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company .

Life

Alfred Uihlein was born in Wertheim am Main in 1852 . There his parents, Josef Benedikt Ühlein and Katharina Krug, ran the restaurant “Gasthaus zur Krone”.

Alfred Uihlein attended high school in Wertheim before he emigrated to the USA in 1867 at the age of 15 . There he worked for the Joseph Uhrig Brewing Company in St. Louis and for another brewery in Leavenworth . In 1871 he moved to Milwaukee and began working for the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company with his brothers August , Henry and Edward .

After the death of Joseph Schlitz in 1875, Uihlein worked for the company as superintendent until 1917. He then succeeded his brother Henry as company president. He also held this position during the Prohibition period .

In addition to his work for the Schlitz Brewery, Uihlein worked as a school representative for Milwaukee (1890-1893) and was a member of several clubs: Association of Commerce, Merchants and Manufacturers Association, Wisconsin Club, Calumet Club, Milwaukee Musical Society and West Side Gymnastics Club. Like his brothers, Uihlein was interested in horse breeding and horse racing .

Alfred Uihlein died in 1935. He is buried in the Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee .

Alfred Uihlein married Anna Pilger on October 26, 1875 (* October 4, 1849, † January 31, 1921). The marriage had five children:

  • Mathilde (May 6, 1878 - July 19, 1944)
  • William Benedict (born January 18, 1880 - † July 28, 1953)
  • Hermann Rudolph (born June 12, 1883; † 1885)
  • Herbert E. (May 1, 1890 - 1947)
