Edward Uihlein

Edward Gustav Uihlein (born October 19, 1845 in Wertheim , † January 25, 1921 in Chicago ) was a German entrepreneur and Vice President of the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company .

biography

Edward Uihlein's parents, Josef Benedikt Ühlein and Katharina Krug, ran the Gasthaus zur Krone in Wertheim , where he has been helping since childhood. As a child he played the violin and was a member of the church choir. At the age of 15 he finished his school career and began an apprenticeship as a businessman in Miltenberg .

In 1864 Uihlein accompanied the Uhrig family and emigrated to the USA . There he first worked in a warehouse in St. Louis . After almost a year he was hired by the Kruz & Hofmeister Brewery as an accountant. Two more years later he moved to Chicago and got into the oil and car parts business.

In 1872 he became general agent of the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company , for which his brothers August , Alfred and Henry also worked. Uihlein later took over the post of Vice President of the Schlitz Brewery.

At the turn of the century Uihlein was responsible for the expansion of brewery-linked restaurants. He concentrated on German districts. A characteristic feature of the Schlitz pubs was the logo of the Schlitz brewery carved in stone.

In addition to his work for the Schlitz brewery, Uihlein was interested in landscape architecture . He was a member of the Chicago Park Commission and drove the expansion of the city parks. In addition, he was a globetrotter and collector of rare tropical plants. He was Vice President of the Chicago Horticultural Society and President of the German Men's Choral Society.

Edward Uihlein is buried in the German Waldheim Cemetery in Forest Park .

Edward Uihlein married Augusta Manns on January 29, 1875. The marriage had six children:
