August Mentzendorff
Otto August Mentzendorff (Latvian Augusts Mencendorfs ; born December 30, 1821 in Durben , Grobin district , Courland governorate ; † October 2, 1901 in Riga ) was a Baltic German merchant and elder of the Great Guild in Riga.
Life
August Mentzendorff was the son of Christian August (1784-1830) and Gertrud Helene Mentzendorff (1799-1840). He had three sisters.
On July 7, 1865, Mentzendorff opened a “colonial goods and delicatessen store” at Sünderstrasse 12 in Riga. Among other things, he represented the Lindt & Sprüngli chocolate factories . From 1900 the shop was located at Sünderstraße 18 . The building Sünderstr. 18 is now known as the Mentzendorffhaus .
August Mentzendorff was a well-known personality who went down in contemporary fiction in Livonia . As a source of ideas and as a patron , he made a significant contribution to the development of (German-speaking) theater and musical life in Riga.
From 1864 August Mentzendorff belonged to the "second guild merchants " of the Rigaschen merchants' guild . On February 17, 1870, he became "Elder" of the Great Guild. He was also a member of the Society for the History and Archeology of the Baltic Provinces of Russia .
