August Ritter von Hoop (born August 11, 1899 in Prague ; died March 2, 1946 there ) was a Czech journalist.

Life

August von Hoop was the son of a Czech father and a German mother. He attended the high school in Smíchov and was drafted into military service in 1916 and deployed on the southern front. After the end of the war he studied German literature and music at the German University in Prague and received his doctorate in 1923. From 1924 to 1926 he worked as the chief editor of the Karlsbader Tagblatt . He went back to Prague and became a local reporter for the Prague press after a long period of tuberculosis .

Due to the break-up of Czechoslovakia , he became unemployed as the newspaper was shut down. In April 1939 he joined the NSDAP and was hired as a press editor by the collaboration government. He then moved to the culture department, which was under the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. As the head of the section, he was responsible for “literacy care”, which also included updating the list of harmful and undesirable literature . He was supposed to control Czech cultural affairs in the interests of the German occupation.

After the war ended, von Hoop was imprisoned on June 4, 1945 in Pankrác prison. He was charged with the censorship measures in the Extraordinary People's Court. At the trial, von Hoop denied that he had put any pressure or censorship on Czech literature, theater and music. He put the responsibility for censorship and repression on the collaborator Emanuel Moravec, who died in 1945 .

August Ritter von Hoop died in custody before the trial was over.
