Augusta Soldan

Augusta Soldan (born July 17, 1826 in Lappeenranta (Swedish: Villmanstrand), † August 29, 1886 in Sortavala ) was a Finnish landscape painter and drawing teacher

Life

Augusta Evelina Soldan was the daughter of bailiff Carl Gustaf Soldan and his wife Ulrika, née Lucander. August Fredrik Soldan (1817–1885), one of her brothers, was the first director of the Finnish mint; his daughter Venny Soldan-Brofeldt (1863–1945) was also a well-known Finnish artist.

Augusta Soldan studied at Helsingfors University's drawing school , where she was tutored by Magnus von Wright . She traveled with him to Düsseldorf in 1857, where both worked for a few months in the studio of the Norwegian landscape painter Hans Gude . After her return she taught as a drawing teacher. She remained unmarried and died after a serious illness at the age of 60.

Augusta Soldan formed herself, among other things, by copying paintings by well-known Düsseldorf painters , including Albert Flamm and Franz Hengsbach . Her own works were mostly small-format landscape pictures, which show the influence of her stay in Düsseldorf in terms of composition and color. In 1854 she was represented for the first time with a painting in an exhibition. In 1861 she received a second prize in the Ducat Prize of the Finnish Art Association.
