Auguste Pelzer

August (e) Pascal Marie Joseph Pelzer (born December 28, 1876 in Aachen , † January 4, 1958 in Vatican City ) was a German-Belgian Roman Catholic theologian and medievalist as well as editor and librarian at the Vatican Apostolic Library .

Live and act

Pelzer was the son of Belgian parents from Herve . After graduating from high school in Aachen studied theology at Pelzer major seminar in Liege and philosophy at the Catholic University of Leuven and graduated in 1898 with his promotion to Dr. phil. from. After his ordination in 1901, he deepened his studies at the "École des sciences morales et historiques" in Leuven . After a short time as chaplain of a women's convent in Jupille in the Diocese of Liège , Cardinal Désiré-Joseph Mercier sent him to Rome in June 1907 at his own expense , where he was supposed to study the manuscripts of the Vatican Library.

In 1910 Pelzer received a position as deputy and from 1915 as a full-time editor at the Vatican Apostolic Library in Rome, which he retained for the rest of his life.

Pelzer specialized in medieval philosophy and school manuscripts and advanced to become a recognized scholastic scholar of those years. He published his main work in the series of the Bibliothecae Apostolicae Vaticanae codices Manuskripti recensiti , where he was responsible for the Codices Vaticani latini 679–1134 from 1931 to 1933 .

From November 1907 until his death in 1958, Pelzer lived in the residential wing of the Church of San Giuliano dei Fiamminghi in Rome. He donated his private book possession to the University of Leuven.

Honors

Pelzer was honored in several ways for his diverse services, including his appointment as Papal Chamberlain in 1915 and Papal House Prelate in 1923.

In addition, he was accepted as a member of the Classe des Lettres de l'Académie royale de Belgique in 1935 and in 1947 as “Dr. phil. hc ”at the Catholic University of Leuven.
