Auguste Nicolas Pomel (born September 20, 1821 in Issoire , Puy-de-Dôme department , † 1898 in Dra-el-Mizan , Algeria ) was a French geologist , paleontologist and politician, as well as botanist. Its botanical author's abbreviation is " Pomel ".

Live and act

Auguste Pomel worked for many years as an engineer in Algerian mines and developed into a specialist in North African fossils. He was director of the service géologique de l'Algérie and professor of geology at the École supérieure des sciences in Algiers . In 1862 he took part in the colonization campaign to Ouargla . Pomel was Senator from Oran and in 1877 as a diplomat in Tunisia. Auguste Pomel is the first to describe the rhinoceros Acerotherium lemanense Pomel , 1853, which is today assigned to Diaceratherium lemanense ( Pomel , 1853), as well as the real salamander Chelotriton paradoxus Pomel , 1853.

On December 23, 1898 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Académie des Sciences .

Honors

The plant genera Pomelia Durando ex Pomel from the umbelliferae family (Apiaceae) and Pomelina (Maire) Güemes & Raynaud from the rockrose family (Cistaceae) are named after him.
