Augustenkoog

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Augustenkoog is a district of the municipality Osterhever in the district of North Friesland , Schleswig-Holstein , Germany , on the Eiderstedt peninsula . Alt-Augustenkoog, Neu-Augustenkoog and Norderheverkoog-West are in the local area.

The Augustenkoog was diked in 1611 by Johann Clausen Rollwagen and named after Augusta of Denmark, the wife of the then Duke Johann Adolf .

In 1939 the Koog still had 97 residents, in 1988 only 58 residents. 36 people currently live on an area of 840 ha in the small town in the Eiderstedt district . On January 1, 2002, the Augustenkoog community voluntarily gave up its independence and joined the Osterhever community . The abandonment of the 390 year old tradition as Koog and later as a separate municipality was due to the dwindling population. Rural exodus and falling numbers of children have caused the population to shrink dramatically, resulting in falling income and increasing expenditure on most of the compulsory tasks. The Augustenkoog, which was debt-free at the time of joining, was easily integrated into the Osterhever community.
