Augustinian monastery Rößel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Augustinian monastery Rößel was a monastery of the order of the Augustinian hermits in Rößel in Warmia (today Reszel in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship ) from the 14th to the 16th century.

history

It was probably founded in 1347. That year, Bishop Hermann von Ermland donated the land to the monastery. It was the first monastery of the Augustinian order in the country of the order. The first monks probably came from Moravia and Bohemia , the home of the bishop, as suggested by some names. It belonged first to the Bavarian Order Province (which included Bohemia and Poland), then from 1359 to the Saxon (North German) Order Province. In 1372 the monastery burned down. In that year a daughter monastery was founded in Heiligenbeil . The Rößel monastery was probably rebuilt soon. It acquired extensive land holdings in the following decades and received numerous donations and endowments. Since 1507 it belonged to the order province of the observance movement.

The time of the dissolution is unknown. In January 1525 valuable holdings from the monastery in the castle in Heilsberg were mentioned for the first time.

In 1631 the Jesuits from Braunsberg settled in the monastery. They founded a high school for initially 15 students in four classes. From 1672 to 1702 they built a new baroque church.

In 1780 the Jesuit monastery was dissolved by the new Prussian administration.

The school continued to be used and continues to the present day.
