Augustus Carney (* around 1870 in Ireland , † 1920 ) was an American actor , known for comedies and westerns by and with Gilbert M. Anderson .

Life

Carney began as a vaudeville artist and worked for Essanay from 1909 , mostly under the direction of Gilbert M. Anderson in comedies and westerns. With Victor Potel he appeared from 1910 to 1911 as the comedian couple Hank and Lank in nine films.

He achieved brief but extremely great popularity in the Snakeville Western comedies in the role of Alkali Ike . In 27 films (1911 to 1914), mostly alongside Harry Todd as Mustang Pete , Victor Potel as Slippery Slim , Fred Church as Rawhide Bill and his wife Margaret Joslin as Sophie Clutts , he fought with his rivals for the favor of city beauty. The success was so great that from 1912 Alkali Ike dolls were sold. Carney's advertising name was The Gibraltar of Fun .

Carney started demanding higher and higher fees until Essanay finally kicked him out. He moved to Universal Studios in 1914 , where he made 15 films as Universal Ike (the original name Alkali Ike remained the property of his previous employer), but in May of this year his new employment contract was terminated prematurely due to difficulties in dealing with the actor. The former star only played a few supporting roles. At the time of his death he was almost forgotten.
