The Aukštaitijos siaurasis Gelezinkelis ( German  Upper Lithuanian Narrow Gauge Railway ) is a 68.4 km long museum - narrow gauge railway from Panevėžys to Rubikiai in Lithuania with a gauge of 750 mm.

history

The narrow-gauge railway was built from 1891 with a gauge of 750 mm. The first section was opened on November 11, 1895 from Švenčionėliai to Pastovai and extended to Panevėžys in 1898 . In the autumn of 1899, the regular passenger and freight traffic began. Initially there were 2 depots , 14 stations, 15 locomotives, 58 passenger cars of different types, 6 mail cars and 112 closed and 154 open freight cars. In 1903 40,632 passengers and 65,000 tons of freight were transported. During the time of Lithuania's independence (1920–1938) Panevėžys developed into a regional center and the raw materials coal, mineral oil, sand, salt and fertilizers as well as agricultural products such as flax, bacon, beet sugar, flour, butter, velvet and wood were used promoted.

During the First World War , in 1916 the German army relocated two new army field railroad sections with a gauge of 600 mm from Gubernija to Pasvalys and from Joniškis to Žeimelis. The railway had its heyday between the First and Second World Wars and supported the region's economic development. In the post-war period, the railway line was operated by the Lithuanian state railway company Lietuvos Geležinkeliai .

Traffic decreased in the second half of the 20th century. In 1996 the operation north of Panevezys was closed. The narrow-gauge railway was declared a national technical cultural heritage in 1996 and began operating museum railways. Freight traffic was stopped in 1999. On November 1, 1999, when Lietuvos Geležinkeliai was restructured, a new department for narrow-gauge railways was created. Nevertheless, in 2001 passenger traffic was discontinued. From 2006 the passenger transport of the museum railway with diesel locomotives of the SŽD series ТУ2 was resumed and there is increasing interest.

Cultural monuments

The narrow-gauge railway stations along the route are valuable historical and cultural sites. The building complexes of the train stations and stops have urban and architectural value. In 1996 the narrow-gauge railway was therefore registered by the Ministry of Immovable Cultural Assets. The state-protected complex has a total length of 179 km and an area of 1,340 ha on the Panevėžys – Biržai, Panevėžys – Rubikiai and Joniškėlis – Linkuva sections, as well as railway stations, industrial buildings and roads. In 2003 some of these objects were declared cultural monuments:

  • The narrow-gauge railway line from Panevėžys to Rubikiai
  • The depot building, the warehouse and the railway viaduct in Panevėžys
  • Taruškos and Raguvėlė railway stations, including warehouses, water tower, workshop, station building and water crane in Raguvėlė
