The locomotives of the class ТУ2 (German transcription TU2) of the Soviet Railways (SŽD) are narrow-gauge diesel locomotives .

development

Around 1953 an increasing demand for narrow-gauge locomotives was foreseeable in the Soviet Union . One reason for this was the planned agricultural use of large parts of northern Kazakhstan (" Neuland Campaign "; Russian: Освоение целины). Diesel-electric locomotives were intended for this.

After the two prototypes of the ТУ1 series from 1954, the Kaluga machine factory began developing the ТУ2 series. The main change was the replacement of the generator with a type MPT-49 / 25-3, which was specially developed for the ТУ2.

1955 was built as a prototype ТУ2-001 and subjected to extensive testing. 1956 began with the serial production of the ТУ2. According to the reason for the construction of the ТУ2, almost all of the locomotives built in 1956 and those from 1957 were used to a large extent for the campaign to cultivate new land and other railways in Kazakhstan. A total of 281 locomotives had been built up to 1959, whereby in the last two years of construction mainly railways in Russia were supplied.

Due to the - apart from a few exceptions - uniform gauge of 750 mm for the narrow-gauge railways of the Soviet Union, the ТУ2 were built exclusively for this gauge. The ТУ2 was not exported.

commitment

The relatively heavy version of the ТУ2 with an axle load of 8 tons limited the areas of application to public railways and industrial railways with a good superstructure. But also some forest railways use ТУ2. The ТУ2 were not suitable for peat tracks due to the high axle load. The ТУ4 series was built for these purposes from 1962 .

The ТУ2 were used both by the regional railway companies for public transport and by other operators. Numerous ТУ2 changed locations in the course of their lives. In Kazakhstan, there was already an overhang in the 1950s because the demand had been overestimated. In 1972, the narrow-gauge railway was due to the Umspurung Marguzek ( Charanor - Priargunsk , Oblast Chita , Siberia ) on broad gauge many ТУ2 in the Ukraine implemented and solved there steam locomotives from. At the same time, the production of the ТУ7 / ТУ7А series began, which also released many ТУ2s. During this time, pioneer railways also developed into an operational area.

In the 1990s, numerous ТУ2s became redundant due to line closures and displacement by ТУ7 / ТУ7А and were scrapped. Only about a third of the original stock, about 95 locomotives are still operational, the majority of which are in occasional use on the former pioneer railways, now known as "children's railways", spread across various successor states of the Soviet Union. The Ukrainian Railways (UZ) are the last state railway that still uses ТУ2. In addition, the privatized Gulbene – Alūksne railway in Latvia still uses ТУ2 for scheduled passenger services. Others are available for special trips on the Lithuanian line Panevėžys - Anykščiai - Rubikiai . A small number of TU2s are still used in Kazakhstan on the narrow-gauge network of Atbassar in freight traffic.

Modifications

The TU2 were originally painted green with a surrounding yellow stripe in the middle of the locomotive body. and a red star on the front. Later, quite a few ТУ2 were painted blue, the red star was dispensed with after the end of the Soviet Union. In recent years, the UZ has introduced new blue paintwork variants with different color schemes for their ТУ2. The locomotives of the children's railways often have multi-colored paintwork in various variations.

The 1D12 diesel engines from the Transmasch plant in Barnaul had to be replaced every few years. Later, a more developed, more durable variant was used. The Kratowo children's railway near Moscow modernized its ТУ2-078 and -129 in 2005 with a redesigned structure (designation ТУ2К). The ТУ2-053 and -228 of the Irkutsk children's railway were provided with completely new superstructures in different designs from 2008.
