Auki is the provincial capital of the Solomonic province of Malaita . It is located at the northern end of the Langalanga lagoon and thus the north-west coast of the island of Malaita . There are daily flights between the capital Honiara (on Guadalcanal ) and Auki. There is also a ferry service between the two cities.
Auki has electricity and the road to the airport is paved (approximately 11 km). In the town's market on the main quay , fruit, vegetables and fresh fish are sold every day.
Auki-Langalanga MP, Matthew Cooper Wale, was elected in 2010. He was previously Minister of Education and Human Resources Development in the previous government and is currently Deputy Party Leader of the opposition. The fifth Anglican Bishop of Malaita, Sam Sahu, has his diocese office in Auki. From there he administers Malaita's 42 parishes.
In addition, the site has the Auki Correctional Center, a prison operated by the Correctional Services of Solomon Islands . It was built in 2009 and can accommodate up to 60 prisoners. This also includes a separate area for women and young people.
