Malaita is a 4,307 km² island of the Pacific island state of the Solomon Islands .

The elongated island belongs geographically to the island chain of the Solomon Islands . It is 80 kilometers south of Santa Isabel and 50 kilometers east of Guadalcanal .

With nearly 140,000 inhabitants, Malaita at the same time the main island of the Solomon Province Malaita . The main town of the island is Auki , located on the northwest coast. The highest point is Mount Kalourat at 1,435 m.

The island was discovered in 1568 by the Spanish navigator Alvaro de Mendaña de Neyra , who is credited with discovering the entire Solomon Islands.
