history

Before World War II , Pavuvu Island was used as a coconut plantation. In 1941, when the United States declared war on Japan , the island's residents left the island when the Imperial Japanese Army occupied the Solomon Islands. After the Battle of Guadalcanal , the USA owned an air force base ( Henderson Field ). So the Japanese garrisons on the island of Pavuvu could be bombed. The US occupies the islands of Pavuvu and Mbanika. Pavuvu Island served as a base for the 1st Division of the US Marines after their participation in the Battle of Cape Gloucester in May 1944. It also served as a base after the Battle of Peleliu . After the war, the former residents came back and grew coconuts again.
