Aukschtaiten

The Aukschtaiten , also Aukštaiten ( pronounced "Aukschtaiten", Lithuanian aukštaičiai ) or Oberlitauer , were a Lithuanian tribe . He was based in what is now Upper Lithuania (Aukschtaitien, Aukštaitija ). Aukschtaiten were the so-called Eastern Old Lithuanians ( rytiniai senlietuviai ). These included the nalšėnai (land area Nalšia ), the deltuviai ( Deltuva ) and the lietuviai (Lietuva) as well as the land of Deremela. In the north they bordered the Sēlija , in the west by the river Šventoji on Lower Lithuania , in the southwest on the Jatwinger , in the south on the Dregowitschen and in the east on the Kriviches .

Languages ​​and dialects

The main dialect is Aukschtai ( aukštaičių tarmė ). It is very easy to understand and is the most widespread throughout Lithuania, but Suvalkietic ( Suvalkija region ) forms the basis for the modern oral Lithuanian language .
