Auditorium maximum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Auditorium maximum ( Latin for the largest lecture hall or Aula Magna ; short form Audimax ) is usually the largest and most representative lecture hall in a university .

The Audimax usually offers space for several hundred people, sometimes even well over 1,000 visitors. The seating area is usually arranged in a sloping and arched manner, which should guarantee a good view and acoustics from the more distant places , similar to the Greek amphitheatres .

Large lectures as well as festive or other large events of the respective university take place in the Audimax , provided that no separate auditorium is available. For example, full meetings of employees or students at the university are often held in the Audimax due to the space requirements. There is also - depending on the university or building situation - the possibility of external use. The largest lecture hall in Germany is the Audimax of the Ruhr University Bochum with 1,749 seats .
