Aurel Perşu (born December 26, 1890 - May 5, 1977 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian mechanical engineer and is considered the designer of the first automobile with an aerodynamic profile in the world.

Life

Perşu studied from 1909 to 1913 at the Technical University of Berlin , which he graduated in 1913 as a farewell speaker; afterwards he taught and worked in Bucharest. He was also one of the first researchers to implement the so-called teardrop shape in car designs.

Around the First World War , Perșu built an electrically powered vehicle , which can still be seen in the Dimitrie Leonida Technical Museum . His career was also marked by the two-year position as director of the "Industria Aeronautică Română" factory (1938-1940) and as a professor at the Bucharest Electrotechnical Institute.

After many aerodynamic laboratory tests and calculations, he came to the conclusion that the ideal shape of a moving vehicle is a body that is rounded at the front and long and pointed at the rear. He managed to achieve low coefficients of drag (like 0.22).

After the First World War he had contacts in Germany again , among others with Emil Everling and Gabriel Becker. In 1922, Perșu registered his “four-wheeled streamlined car with wheels built into the streamlined shape ” at the German Patent Office in Berlin . 1923 there was already a 1: 1 wooden model hand over the persu an aluminum - body formed. The vehicle was built with his own money in Berlin between 1922 and 1924.

The body deviated from the design, Perșu tried to use series components to build this prototype inexpensively. The engine had four cylinders and was supplied by AGA (Berlin). Perșu designed the car as a test vehicle to test and then sell the concept to a car company. This failed and so the PERSU stood in the garage of its inventor until he gave it to the Technical Museum Dimitrie Leonida in Bucharest a year before his death .
