The thriller focuses on the research of a British historian into Russia's Stalinist past , the author linking fiction with historical facts. The British historian Fluke Kelso attends a congress in Moscow . There he meets Papu Rapawa, who was formerly the bodyguard of the secret service chief Lavrenti Beria . Rapava tells the British about legacies that his boss had disappeared after Stalin's death . After Rapawa's disappearance, Kelso sets out to find the hiding place for the alleged documents. In the course of his research, the American journalist O'Brian and Rapawa's daughter, Sinaida, join him. The opposite side to the old Stalinist Mamantov is also interested in the hidden property. Near the city of Arkhangelsk , Kelso meets a hitherto unknown son of Stalin who lives in the wilderness.
