From a snail's diary

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

From the diary of a snail is a work by Günter Grass that was first published in 1972.

content

Grass describes his engagement in the election campaign for the SPD from 1969 to 1972, especially for Willy Brandt and his work in Group 47 . This political stance was very unusual at the time. The diary, though fictional, portrays actual events.

The book begins with Gustav Heinemann's election as Federal President in 1969. Among other things, Grass draws comparisons to the political events of his time in Danzig in 1930. At that time, the German nationalists were dependent on votes from the NSDAP. This is compared to the election of Heinemann in the third ballot for Federal President, in which the Union parties together with the right-wing extremist NPD voted against Heinemann. From the diary of a snail closes with the election of Willy Brandt as Federal Chancellor.
