content

The subtitle reads: Forays through fields and meadows, household, science and life. The book consists of three parts, which were also offered as individual issues in contemporary bookshops, and contains popular scientific treatises on many natural, physical, chemical and other scientific topics. The author wants to bring the small and inconspicuous natural things closer to an audience unfamiliar with the natural sciences. This is already shown by the headings of some chapters such as flower letters and flower mail , highwaymen from the insect world , intimate things about earthworms , etc. But topics that Stinde pursued with enlightenment intentions are also represented here: science and dizziness, hypnotism and magic. Most of the articles first appeared in newspapers and magazines. In the foreword, Stinde names a few magazines: Daheim , Frauen-Zeitung , Die Gartenlaube , Deutsches Mondagsblatt , Berliner Tageblatt .

History of the book

Five publishers were involved in the publication of the book: L. Heege (Schneidnitz), Hönsch & Tiesler (Dresden), Feodor Reinboth (Leipzig), Schloemp (Leipzig) and Gebrüder Senf (Leipzig). This can mean that it was a coveted book project that was interesting for many publishers, but it can also mean that the author struggled to find the right publisher. There are five letters from Stinde to the publisher Schloemp about the creation of the first edition from 1880, which are kept in the Schleswig-Holstein State Library in Kiel and have also been published in print. Here Stinde describes the texts as "chats" and explains that he took particular care in selecting the texts and determining their order. Letters from the publishers Feodor Reinboth and Hönsch & Tiesler, which are kept in the Stinde estate at the manuscript department of the Berlin State Library (Potsdamer Strasse building) , provide information about the further changes in the publisher's book . The Hönsch & Tiesler publishing house wrote to Stinde on February 1, 1889: "... And volume I. should be published this month, volume II. In a few weeks, and volume III in the summer". A copy of this second edition is available at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, the publisher's name Hönsch & Tiesler is hidden here by an adhesive label from Verlag L. Heege (Schneidnitz). After its publication, the book was taken over by another publisher. Nothing can be determined about the sales success. The author has probably been settled with a one-off payment, which he describes as "a bit lean". Stinde's colleagues and contemporaries highly valued his scientific articles and chats, Johannes Trojan writes that they are "among the best of the kind in terms of skill and clarity of presentation". In 1892 a Swedish translation was published under the title Fran naturens dolda Verkstad , in which two articles not included in the German edition are printed.
