Berthe Rakotosamimanana , also Madame Berthe (born as Berthe Rasoamialinivo on January 18, 1938 in Andasibe , Moramanga district , Madagascar ; died on November 29, 2005 in Antananarivo ), was a Malagasy palaeontologist , primatologist and university teacher.

Career

Berthe Rakotosamimanana acquired in 1967 with a dissertation on the papillary ridges of three ethnic groups of Madagascar at the natural science faculty of the University of Paris the Doctorat de 3ème cycle in biological anthropology . She then returned to Madagascar and was commissioned to teach geology at the natural science faculty of the Université d'Antananarivo . From 1974 she worked for the newly established Chair of Paleontology . In 1977 she received the Doctorat d'Etat from the University of Paris VII with a dissertation on anthropological diversity in the highlands of Madagascar . Afterwards she was responsible for courses in geology and paleontology at the Université d'Antananarivo and until 1983 director at the Ministry of Education and Research. From 1986 to 1992 she was an advisor to the Ministry of Higher Education. In 1993 the Chair of Paleontology became the Chair of Paleontology and Biological Anthropology on her initiative. There she took over the management of the Laboratoire d'Anthropologie there in 1995 and held it until she retired in 1998. She continued to work at the faculty until 2003 and supervised doctoral students until her death.

The research of Rakotosamimananas focused on the fossil and subfossil mammalian fauna of Madagascar. As a co-author, she was involved in the first descriptions of † Ambondro mahabo , an early mammal from the Malagasy Middle Jurassic ( Bathonium ), and † Babakotia , a genus of lemurs that became extinct less than 1000 years ago.

Rakotosamimanana was a member of a number of international professional associations and organizations working in the fields of biological anthropology, primate research and the protection of biodiversity . In 1994, Rakotosamimanana was the co-founder and first president of the Groupe d'étude et de recherche sur les primates de Madagascar (GERP), an Antananarivo- based non-profit organization for research on Malagasy primates . She held the office of President of the GERP until her death.

While Rakotosamimanana was still alive, a newly described species of mouse lemur was named after her, Berthe's mouse lemur . With this, the authors of the first description paid tribute to the long-term coordination of research carried out with the German Primate Center in the Kirindy-Mitea National Park , the habitat of Berthe's mouse lemur.
