Behmshöhe observation tower

The observation tower Behmshöhe , also spelled “Behms Höhe” , is an observation tower in Nemerower Holz near Neubrandenburg . With its 34 meters on one steeply to surmounted Tollensesee falling boulder clay cliff built brick tower the lake level by 42 meters. The hill and tower are named after the mayor of Neubrandenburg, Erasmus Behm (1596–1631), who was killed by troops under General Tilly during the Thirty Years' War during the conquest of the city of Neubrandenburg .

The northern part of the Nemerower Holz with the Kurhaus Augustabad had developed into a popular excursion destination for Neubrandenburgers and visitors from outside in the 19th century. On the initiative of the Association for the Promotion of Tourism , the city council decided in 1897 to build an observation tower as a point of attraction for increasing tourism. Financing came from private donations and money collections at folk festivals organized for this purpose. The tower was designed by the architect Fehmer. On June 8 and 9, 1905, it was inaugurated with a festival.

After the end of the Second World War , the wooden stairs were removed for firewood. With the establishment of a military restricted area in Nemerower Holz, the tower was no longer accessible and began to deteriorate. After the fall of the Berlin Wall , the restricted area was lifted. The tower, which has been on the list of architectural monuments in Neubrandenburg since 1992 , was restored until 1995 and has been open again since then.

Seasonally, the tower is open to visitors between April 8th and November 14th from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
