Kurhaus Augustabad (around 1900)

Augustabad is a location on Lake Tollensesee in Neubrandenburg , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

The Kurhaus Augustabad was opened in 1895. It was named after the Grand Duchess Augusta Caroline of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1822–1916).

A prominent spa guest was the poet Theodor Fontane (1819–1898), who stayed there for several days in 1897 with his wife and daughter. Further villas, guest houses and rest homes with many offers for holiday guests such as a well-tended beach, an oak-lined, elegant promenade, rowing boats, the Behms Höhe observation tower and a steamboat pier were built in the area. The owners or tenants of the Kurhaus changed several times.

During the First World War , the Kurhaus became a prisoner of war camp for British officers. In the mid-twenties, the German National Health Insurance Fund in Hamburg took over the house and had it converted into a rest home for its members. With the beginning of the Second World War , the house was converted into a military hospital, soon after the area became a restricted area and the Neubrandenburg torpedo testing facility was built. On April 28, 1945, the Soviet army captured the site and in 1947 handed it over to the city of Neubrandenburg.

During the GDR era, the area was declared a restricted area again, and from 1953 the Neubrandenburg (RWN) repair plant , an armaments factory primarily for tanks, was located here . The old Kurhaus was now used as a dormitory for apprentices.

After the fall of the Wall , the area was again open to the public. A health insurance company moved into the old Kurhaus Augustabad again, after which it stood unused for years and was demolished in 2005. The RWN continued to exist and now took on disarmament and scrapping orders until it closed in December 2001 due to a lack of orders. In 2003 the former, 2.6 km long works railway to the Neubrandenburg train station was dismantled.

Today the Augustabad bathing beach is located on the site , and the road leading to it is called Am Augustabad .
