The oyster rookery is a breeding colony of emperor penguins on the Mawson Coast of the East Antarctic Mac Robertson Land . It lies on the sea ice surrounded by icebergs that have run aground 51 km east-northeast of the Mawson station .

Doug Johnston, a pilot with the Royal Australian Air Force , spotted them in August 1957 on board an aircraft made by the British manufacturer Auster Aircraft , after which the colony is named.
