Austrian National Election Study

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Austrian National Election Study (AUTNES, sometimes also the Austrian National Election Study) is a social science survey and initially observes and analyzes three national elections (2008, 2013 and 2017). In this most comprehensive project in Austrian electoral research to date, cross-sectional and both short and long-term longitudinal surveys are used as the database and combined with a candidate survey and content analyzes of election advertising, press releases, party programs, media coverage and social media. The central aim is to contribute to a better understanding of how Austrian democracy works.

As of 2019, the study will be led by Wolfgang C. Müller, Sylvia Kritzinger and Hajo G. Boomgaarden (all University of Vienna ). Former project managers were Günther Lengauer , Fritz Plasser and Klaus Schönbach . AUTNES was financed from 2009 to 2016 by the Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research (FWF). The AUTNES election study for the 2017 National Council election is being carried out as part of ACIER - Austrian Cooperative Infrastructure for Electoral Research and is financed by the university area structure funds of the Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Research . ACIER is a research cooperation between the University of Vienna, the University of Salzburg and the University of Innsbruck and runs until 2019. An institutional continuation as an Austrian election study is aimed for.

In addition to numerous publications in internationally renowned specialist journals, the team around AUTNES published the book "The National Council Election 2013 - How parties, media and electorate work together" in 2014.

Design by AUTNES

AUTNES is an integrated study that takes into account the 'demand side' (voters) and the 'supply side' (political parties and candidates) in political competition, as well as the 'media side' (media coverage during election campaigns) .

The demand side

The 'Demand Side' generally focuses on the voting behavior of Austrians in National Council elections and how this can be described and explained. The most important research fields of the team are, for example, voting behavior around 'voting at 16', populist attitudes and the choice of right-wing populist parties, the importance of coalition preferences, as well as attitudes to immigration and the economic situation.

The supply side

This part of the project describes and analyzes the supply side in elections. The supply side deals with classic and new research questions on dynamics in the thematic focus of the parties in party programs or press releases and their positioning, their orientation towards top candidates, how parties deal with their competition and their track record, as well as the campaign strategies of the candidates Parties in the constituencies. Among other things, the focus is also on negative campaigning .

The media side

The 'Media Side' part of the project is responsible for a systematic and comprehensive content analysis of reporting on Austrian politics and politicians during the election campaign. On the one hand, the knowledge and understanding of the production of political media messages during election times and their effects on media content should be expanded. On the other hand, the focus is on the influence of media coverage on attitudes, perceptions and decisions of the electorate.

The integration of the AUTNES components

The survey components are linked by an identical core questionnaire, which is completed by component-specific questions in order to realize the individual analysis goals of each component. The similar time frame also makes it possible to compare the various components with one another. Parallel to the survey components, the election campaign media content analyzes, the analyzes of the TV duels, the candidate studies and the content analyzes of the party programs, press releases and election advertisements provide context-related information for explaining the individual behavior of the voters.

Data

The data sets generated by AUTNES are available to the interested public free of charge. They can be accessed via GESIS until 2016 and via AUSSDA - The Austrian Social Science Data Archive from 2017.

International cooperation

AUTNES works closely with other national elective studies (e.g. German Longitudinal Election Study and Swiss Electoral Studies ) as well as comparative projects such as the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems (CSES).
