Austrocactus patagonicus is a species of plant in the genus Austrocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet patagonicus refers to the occurrence of the species in Patagonia .

description

Austrocactus patagonicus grows sprouting with columnar shoots that reach heights of up to 50 centimeters with a diameter of 8 centimeters. There are 9 to 12 ribs , which are somewhat divided into cusps . The 1 to 4 strong, occasionally hooked central spines are yellowish brown to darker and 3 to 4 centimeters long. The 6 to 10 radial spines are light and up to 1.5 inches long.

The pink-red to violet-pink flowers are up to 4 centimeters long. The spherical fruits are almost dry.

Distribution and systematics

Austrocactus patagonicus is widespread in southern Argentina and Chile at altitudes of up to 1000 meters.

The first description as Cereus patagonicus by Carlos Luis Spegazzini was published in 1897. Curt Backeberg placed them in the genus Austrocactus in 1939 . A nomenclature synonym is Malacocarpus patagonicus (FACWeber ex Speg.) Hosseus (1926, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 34.1a).
