Autariats

The Autariats were one of the largest Illyrian tribes . The strain was late in its history Celticized and moved northeast of the Prokletije in today's border between Bosnia , Serbia , Kosovo and Montenegro .

The leading class of the autariats left behind large barrows that were built in the 5th century BC. BC originated.

End of the 6th century BC Chr. The autariatae formed a political entity. They expanded east into tribal territory and displaced the Triballians to the southern banks of the Danube . They also advanced south and defeated their eternal rivals, the Ardianas , to annex their pastures and salt springs . The Ardians then migrated south to the Adriatic . With this expansion, the autariats achieved hegemonic control over the interior of the Balkan Peninsula .

The Roman historian Appian wrote that the Ardianas were weakened by the Autariats, also because, unlike them, they had a sea fleet.
