AutoRuns (often only Autoruns ) is a freeware - software for Windows , which from the Microsoft Department Sysinternals is developed. The program is an alternative to the Windows internal autostart configuration menu Msconfig .

function

In contrast to the Windows own tool msconfig.exe and comparable programs from third-party providers, Autoruns shows the programs, libraries, services and routines that are executed at system start in great detail. The different categories are organized in tabs. It provides extensive information, for example a description, the program path or manufacturer of the program, so that a comprehensive system analysis is possible. The entries are listed in the order in which they are processed in Windows.

By choosing different options, it is possible to hide startup entries from Microsoft or Windows in order to focus on third-party software. The respective entries can be deactivated or activated again by clicking the associated checkbox. A high number of programs in the autostart slows the system down during booting as well as in normal operation, since the additional requirements of the programs running in the background mean that the operating system has less computing power or general system resources.

Since version 13, Autoruns has offered the option of having entries checked by the VirusTotal virus scanning service .

The program works as a portable software , so it can also be used from mobile data carriers without installation . B. USB memory sticks or CD-ROMs - can be started and executed. However, all settings made are saved in the local Windows registry , which means that they are not portable themselves.
