VirusTotal is a free online service now operated by Google Inc. to upload individual files and have them analyzed online by over 70 different antivirus programs and malware scanners in currently 28 languages, although not every program can scan every file type or is available for every search option stands.
Files to be tested can either be uploaded directly to the website (also via SSL ) or sent by e-mail. As of January 2018, files with a maximum size of 256 megabytes can be submitted for review via the international VirusTotal website ( only up to 128 MB via the German-language website www.virustotal.com/de ).
Using the multitude of antivirus programs allows the user to get more reliable results than with just one scanner. In fact, it is often the case that some of the programs recognize a file as malware, while others do not. To interpret the results ultimately remains the responsibility of the user.
VirusTotal was named one of the 100 best products by the US computer magazine PC World 2007. The site is also recommended by the trade journal c't .
VirusTotal has belonged to Google Inc. since September 7, 2012. No details of the purchase price were given.
The uploaded files may be U. made available to third parties, e.g. B. Security companies with a corresponding paid subscription .
