Trend Micro Germany: Former company headquarters in Unterschleißheim

The Trend Micro Incorporated ( Jap. トレンドマイクロ株式会社, torendo maikuro kabushiki-gaisha ) is an international Japanese provider of software and services in the areas of server -, network - and Endpunktesicherheit.

Founded in 1988, the company has offices in more than 30 countries and has been the world market leader in server security since 2010.

history

Trend Micro was founded in California in 1988 by Taiwanese native Steve Chang and launched its first anti-virus program in 1990 . After the takeover of a Japanese software company, the headquarters were relocated to Tokyo in 1992 .

In 1992, Trend Micro signed a cooperation agreement with Intel and was able to sell its virus protection software for LAN environments under the Intel brand. In 1993, the US company Novell bundled this software with its own network operating system.

In 2004, then Chief Executive Officer Steve Chang handed over management to Eva Chen, co-founder of Trend Micro. Trend Micro was the first manufacturer (2004) of a platform-independent online scanner.

Starting in 2004, Trend Micro scanned emails and email attachments for viruses instead of McAfee at Hotmail , which increased the company's profile.

In April 2005, a faulty virus description file (so-called "pattern file") from Trend Micro in Japan caused major computer breakdowns. Due to the time difference, the damage in Europe was relatively minor, as an error-free pattern file was made available within a few hours.

In 2005 Trend Micro bought the antispyware manufacturer Intermute and the IP filter specialist Kelkea and integrated their technology into its own products. The Canadian security provider Third Brigade was added in 2009, the Taiwanese manufacturer Broadweb in 2012 and the HP subsidiary Tipping Point in 2015 . Not least because of these takeovers, Trend Micro's focus increasingly shifted from classic virus protection to the development of cloud-based security technology.

The German subsidiary of Trend Micro was founded in 1996 and has been located in Hallbergmoos in the Freising district (previously in Unterschleißheim ) since mid-August 2009 . The company is a member of the Business Software Alliance .

Cooperation with Interpol

Trend Micro has been working with Interpol to fight cybercrime since 2013. An official partnership has existed since September 2014, within the framework of which the company makes its database available to the international police authority for threat analysis. The arrest of a Nigerian cyber criminal resulting from the cooperation attracted international attention in June 2016.

Products

Trend Micro's focus today is on security software that provides defense mechanisms for various malware entry points for businesses. The three main products are (as of March 2017):

  • Deep Security , security software for data centers. In addition to physical servers, it is particularly geared towards virtual and cloud-based systems and provides the necessary security infrastructure (including malware protection, host-based firewall , detection and defense against intruders and integrity monitoring).
  • Deep Discovery , so-called "Breach Detection" software - focus on discovering threats that have bypassed defense mechanisms and on weighing the potential risk to a company.
  • Smart Protection Suites , security software to protect endpoints (Windows, Mac and mobile operating systems) - protects individual users from harming their own company through carelessness.
  • Intrusion detection / intrusion prevention systems (TippingPoint) - uses virtualized machines or appliances to examine IP connections for anomalies and malicious code.

The products can be connected to each other according to the manufacturer's specifications ( XGen ) and are based on the common technical basis of the so-called Smart Protection Network , the company's big data , in which data from all over the world is recorded, linked and analyzed. Machine learning algorithms are used, among other things , that recognize new attack infrastructures in real time and pass the information on to existing defense techniques.

share

Over the counter , the company's shares were traded in Tokyo since August 1998 (so-called OTC trading). The IPO on the Tokyo Stock Exchange under the identification number 4704 took place two years later. The company's shares are listed on the Nikkei 225 .
