Microworld is a strategic board game for two people from 2016 by Martino Chiacchiera . It is a so-called area control game in which each of the two players has to get as many points as possible by occupying fields with the help of their markers on a playing field. Thematically, the fight between antibodies and viruses for various human tissues is re-enacted.

Theme and equipment

The game is a strategic area control game in which each player tries to get as many points as possible by placing his marker. The players take on the role of antibodies or viruses with which they want to dominate various human tissues ( muscle , bone , nerve and mucous membrane tissues ).

The game material consists of:

  • a variable circular playing field made of four double-sided printed quarter circles,
  • a four-part circular point bar that is placed as a frame around the playing field,
  • 14 virus and antibody markers each (yellow and violet markers),
  • one scoring marker per player,
  • nine gene markers,
  • a gene arrow,
  • a gene marker overview,
  • a rule overview in which eight additional rule tiles can be inserted.

For the different scenarios there are also eight additional rule tiles, four target tiles, six mutation tiles, five mutation markers and a scenario sheet.

Style of play

At the beginning of the game, the game board is put together from the frame of the scoring track and the four parts of the map, then seven gene markers are placed on the spaces provided. The gene marker overview and the gene arrow to mark the most recently used gene marker are placed next to the playing field. The players decide who plays as viruses and antibodies and receive the respective markers. The two scoring markers are placed on space 0 of the scoring track.

The starting player is always the player who plays the viruses (yellow marker). He places one of his markers on a tissue field with a gene marker of his choice, the marker is removed from the game. Then the players take turns placing their own marker on the field adjacent to the marker previously placed by the opponent. If it is not possible to place it next to one another, the player concerned may place his marker on any free space. Whenever a player has placed a marker, he gets points according to the number of his own markers next to it on the field.

If a player places a marker on a space with a gene marker, he may take it and play it immediately or later. The gene markers allow different actions and ratings that the player can use to his advantage before or after his turn.

The game ends when both players have discarded all of their markers. A final scoring is then carried out in which the players receive points in addition to the points already scored in the game according to the majority ratios in the various tissue areas. The winner is the player who has the most points in the end.

Scenarios / variants

The rules of the game can be varied using the eight additional rule tiles included, which concern different parts of the game and can be combined as required. The rules of the game provide 10 different combinations as scenarios, further combinations are possible.

Individual rules enable the players to get additional gene markers or integrate with the four target tiles, the six mutation tiles and the five mutation markers the addition of additional game material, which is used accordingly in the game. Other rule supplements change the rating depending on the cell or tissue type.

For the introduction of the game in 2016, a promo game was released with a double marker for both factions and an additional rule in which a player receives minus points according to the number of gene markers taken. Two more promos appeared in 2016 from the board game database BoardGameGeek and also in 2016 an extension from Cranio Games, each with two additional rule extensions.
