Fabelsaft is a card game by the German game designer Friedemann Friese , which was published in 2016 by the game publisher 2F-Spiele , which he runs. It is an implementation of the legacy principle, in which every new game round is dependent on the game and the outcome of the last game round with the same players. The game was added to the recommendation list for Game of the Year 2017 in May 2017 . In addition, the game was honored as one of two game hits with friends at the Austrian game of games in 2017.

Style of play

In fabulous juice , the aim of the players is to use different fruits to produce different types of fruit juices, which are known as fabulous juices, as quickly as possible from the cards on display. The players receive the necessary fruits via various game mechanisms that are determined by the cards. However, when the juices are made, the display changes, and the display of a game being played is carried over to the next game round of the same players, which means that the game changes for them from round to round due to cards that are no longer available and new cards and other elements. Unlike other legacy games such as Pandemic Legacy or Risk Evolution , the changes in Fabelsaft are not permanent and the game can be restored to its original state by adding the cards that have already been played.

In addition to the instructions, the game material consists of:

  • 240 location cards, 4 each with the numbers 1 to 58 and 8 with the number 59
  • 60 fruit cards, each with 12 pineapples, bananas, strawberries, coconuts and grapes
  • 10 fruit mix cards
  • 6 wooden animals
  • 6 animal tokens
  • 5 fruit plates
  • 3 joker tiles
  • a thief (monkey figure)
  • 3 double pull plates

Game preparation

At the beginning of the game, each player chooses one of the wooden animals and the corresponding tile. The packets with the location cards are opened and, without shuffling, placed on an open pile with location # 1 on top. Locations # 1 to # 6 are removed and placed ready in individual open stacks below the location stack. Then the 60 fruit cards are shuffled and each player receives 2 fruits, which he puts in his hand. The remaining fruit cards are placed face down next to the location pile as a draw pile. All other game materials are put back in the packaging until they are needed. Finally, a starting player is determined who chooses any remaining wooden animal as the starting player marker.

Game flow

Actions per turn
  • Choose location card and place pawn
  • Take action and take fruit OR
  • Make fable juice and display a new location card

In each turn the active player selects one of the location cards on display and places his pawn on this card. If one or more players are already on the card, the active player must give them a fruit of their choice. If he cannot do this, he distributes all his fruits to the players he has chosen or, if he does not have any, does not pay at all. The action described on the card is carried out, in this way a player can collect fruit cards or receive other advantages.

If a player has enough fruit to make a fabulous juice, he can do this instead of the card action; the costs for the respective fabulous juice are indicated on the respective local map. Both individual fruits and smoothies can be shown, the latter can be paid for with any fruit. The player pays the corresponding costs and takes the corresponding card, which he places upside down in front of him. Then he draws the top location card from the location pile and places it in the display; if the card is not yet on display, a new pile is started. As soon as the last card of a pile becomes a fable juice, this and its action can no longer be used. After the action has been carried out or a fabulous juice has been bought, it is the next player's turn.

End of game and evaluation

The game ends after the round in which a player was able to make the number of fable juices required for the number of players. With two players, 5 fabulous juices must be made, with three players 4 fabulous juices and with four or five players 3 fabulous juices. The current round is played to the end, the player with the most fabulous juices wins the game. If there is a tie, the player with the most fruits wins and if this results in a tie again, the players win together.

Prepare the next batch

Since with Fabelsaft the next game of the game always builds on the previous game, the next game is prepared at the end of the game. To do this, all cards that have been processed into fabulous juice are packed in a bag and removed from the game. The remaining location cards are sorted and placed on the location pile, the next game then begins with a display of the top 24 location cards. The new starting player is the loser of the last round, he receives the starting player marker and distributes the fruit cards to the other players.

The location cards that have been removed from the game can be returned to the overall pile at any time if the game is to be played with other players. In this case, the last display of the current round should be noted so that the game can be started again at this point at a later time.

Overall rating

As a rule, each individual game is rated individually and a winner is determined in each case. If several games are to be rated together or even an overall winner is determined, the rules suggest that the respective round winners be given 2 victory points and the last 0 victory points and all other players each given one victory point. The player who has the most victory points at the end of the overall game wins the game.
